A New Award at DOK.fest München: The all inclusive Award
From PATRICE: THE MOVIE (c) DOK.fest München
DOK.fest München is honouring documentary film productions in which filmmakers with disabilities play a leading role with a new award. The all inclusive award includes a prize of 5,000 euros donated by the Werksviertel-Mitte Stiftung München. It honours the inclusive team effort in the realisation of the film. The first all inclusive award winner is PATRICE: THE MOVIE by US director Ted Passon. The film will have its German premiere at DOK.fest Munich.
Daniel Sponsel and Adele Kohout (Festival Directors):“Practised diversity is still not a standard – this also applies to the documentary film industry. The award focuses on the creative, competent, and professional contributions and perspectives of filmmakers with disabilities – behind the camera, in directing, editing, and production. The award thus sends out a powerful signal for more participation, visibility, and diversity in the film industry.”
Isabell Zacharias (Managing Director of the Werksviertel-Mitte Stiftung München):“Some people are born with disabilities, some are disabled as a result of accidents or other causes, but it is primarily our society that is disabled! I am very proud to be able to award this prize and will be even prouder when we no longer need it.”
PATRICE: THE MOVIE tells the story of Patrice and her partner Garry. They want to get married. But as a couple with disabilities, they are at risk of having their state benefits cancelled. Supported by friends, they face up to the unfair law and other challenges. A life-affirming film about love, equality, and breaking down social barriers.
From the jury statement:“Inclusion is a delicate plant': PATRICE: THE MOVIE treats this topic with the sensitivity of a delicate pencil. As world events show – and we also look at examples from the USA – the film's concern is more important than ever: human rights must remain inviolable.”
The jury was made up of Seneit Debese (founder and managing director of Greta & Starks Apps GmbH), Olaf Jacobs (producer of Hoferichter & Jacobs Film- und Fernsehproduktionsgesellschaft), and Tina Thiele (owner and publisher of Casting-Network).
Director Ted Passon developed and directed the critically acclaimed and award-winning docu-series PHILLY D.A. (2021). Ted is a 2018 Sundance Catalyst Fellow, 2016 Sundance Lab Creative Summit Fellow and co-founder of All Ages Productions.
Producer and screenwriter Kyla Harris is a British performer, writer and producer with disabilities who brings an intersectional perspective to her scripts and documentaries. She is Chair of We Crip Film for the BFI, a BAFTA member and an advisory member of Filmmakers with Disabilities (FWD-DOC).
The presentation of the all inclusive award and the German premiere of the film PATRICE: THE MOVIE will take place on 10 May at 8 pm at Münchner Kammerspiele.
