The DOK.edit Award – presented by Adobe, which honours the work of documentary film editors, will be presented for the fifth time at DOK.fest München. This year, the award goes to editor Timo Langer for the film A SUDDEN GLIMPSE TO DEEPER THINGS by director Mark Cousins. The award is worth 5,000 euros and is sponsored by Adobe.
In 1949, the British painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham climbed the Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland and had an epiphany that rewired her brain and changed her art forever. The filmmaker Mark Cousins plunges into her life and work and explores the secrets of her creativity – an exceptional and fascinating portrait of an artist.
From the jury statement:“The courageous composition of the heterogeneous source material leaves room for the discovery of her art and leads sensitively through Willi’s life story. The result is a unique, captivating narrative rhythm inspired by the artist's work. It is fascinating how the film manages to give the viewer the feeling of being present at the creation of the works and seeing them through the eyes of the artist. It is particularly impressive how the editor creates space for images that go beyond words and invite intense contemplation. The use of colours and shapes, mathematical formulae and spiritual influences give the film a unique and profound aesthetic.”
The jury was made up of Gisela Castronari-Jaensch (Lecturer in Editing at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy), Kaya Inan (Editor) and Yana Höhnerbach (Editor).
The award-winner Timo Langer is an editor and filmmaker. He has been editing Mark Cousins’ films since 2008. These have been screened at festivals including Venice, Telluride, Sundance and Toronto. In 2017 Timo Langer released his award-winning feature film debut I AM ANNA.
Livia Sedlmeir (Communication Manager, Adobe Germany):“The art of the editor is too often overlooked. Yet their work is always and without exception crucial to the quality of a film. This is particularly evident in Timo Langer’s contribution to A SUDDEN GLIMPSE TO DEEPER THINGS, where his editorial work contributes to the film’s extraordinary storytelling and aesthetic. We are delighted to be able to draw additional attention to this achievement with the DOK.edit – presented by Adobe award. Congratulations!”
The DOK.edit Award – presented by Adobe will be presented on 13 May at 8 pm in the Audimax of the HFF Munich.
